Our Story
Welcome to Autana Bilingual Montessori School, nestled in Boulder County, where we celebrate the individuality of every child. We cherish diversity and cultivate an environment of freedom within structured boundaries. We empower each child to advocate for themselves and to navigate their way in this world safely.
We believe that every child is unique and marvelous, with a remarkable capacity to discover and create from the time they are born. Our responsibility is to nurture and protect their human nature, their kindness, generosity, focus, hard work, and creativity.
How it all began…
Once upon a time in Caracas, Venezuela, three sisters named Patricia, Raquel, and Natalia Santamaria, founded the 'John Dewey School,' a large preschool that allowed children to experience the world through nature and exploration of their environment.
Even after moving to Boulder, they remained committed to their vision and continued to expand their knowledge and experience to pursue their dream of creating a unique school. In 2010, they established the Autana Montessori School, a home-based program that operated for eight years.
Patricia and Raquel dedicated themselves to the children, providing them with an educational experience focused on nature, peace, and independence while embracing all cultures and fostering respect and compassion.
After many years of hard work, they were finally able to expand Autana, moving into a larger space in Lafayette, in January 2018. Here, they created an environment that allowed the children to explore, learn, create, be independent, and even learn a second language. Their beautiful school is a testament to their dedication to the community and their love of education.
What is the meaning of Autana?
Our school is named after a remarkable flat-top mountain called "tepui," found in the Venezuelan Rain Forest.
There is an immense quartz cave that extends across this mountain. The Piaroa Indians consider this mountain to be the remains of "the sacred tree of the fruits of the world" or "The Tree of Life" in their mythology. According to Piaroan beliefs, "the tree-top reached the infinite, and its branches were laden with fruits that nourished the Amazon." This pristine location is as exceptional as a child's spirit. Children are a beacon of hope for humanity, similar to the Tree of Life for the Piaroa.
“Children enjoy the simplest things in life and are pure and happy.”
— Raquel, Founder of Autana Montessori
As Montessori guides, we believe that our purpose is to show the children how wonderful and unique they are and to help them discover themselves and the world around them.
